How much energy can be saved by building a smart grid in the United States?

I’m not sure if you mean just one smart grid in the U.S. or if the whole of the U.S. had smart grids because I think each city would need to develop smart grids for their own area. The San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association predicts that if a smart grid were created just for San Francisco it would save roughly 137,800 tons of energy.
