How much does plastic-wrapping fruits and vegetables for store shelves prolong their shelf-life? Is it worth the plastic?

Storing produce in plastic wrap can help extend the shelf life, but typically only if it is refrigerated, and only for a few extra days. Most of the produce bought in stores is used within a few days of purchase anyway. If a store does not sell its produce fast enough, they may consider plastic wrap to extend the shelf life, but for many stores this is a waste of money and an unnecessary source of pollution.
