The general rule is that a lawn needs 1 inch of water per week. If your lawn receives this naturally, that is sufficient. The best way to know is to leave a small can such as a tuna can outside and to measure the water content it receives. If you water your lawn with a sprinkler that doesn’t tell you its water output, you can use this same method to figure out how long it takes the sprinkler to deliver one inch of water. To conserve much needed water resources, you can also convert to drought-resistant grass or xeriscape your lawn in arid climates.
