How much energy does it take to make water boil?

It takes one calorie to raise one cubic centimeter (cc) of water by one degree centigrade. To raise one liter of water from 15 degrees to 100 degrees (which is the boiling point of water at sea level) requires 85,000 calories, or 85 kilocalories, which are the “Calories” listed on food labels.
