It costs 1.62 cents to make one penny (which is worth 1.0 cents). This means that It costs more to make a penny than the penny is actually worth.
Same with the nickel, it costs 5.79 cents to produce a nickel (worth 5.0 cents).
According to the United States Mint’s 2010 report, the cost of creating a penny has increased (for the fifth consecutive year) to 1.79 cents. Nickels are the only other coin (of the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar) currently being minted at a loss.
