I do not know the exact figures for owning a car in Europe vs. America, but I would have to assume given gas prices and car taxes in Europe, it is much more expensive. I think its hard to measure exactly, because a study would have to account for the same type of car that was driven at the same type of mileage. I do know that part of the reason biking has become so popular in Copenhagen and Denmark, because high taxes on cars begining in the 1930s and 40s have caused many working class Danes to ride bikes, as they could not afford cars. Now Copenhagen has many streets and bridges only bicycles are allowed to use.
