Environmentally and economically speaking, the costs are high. In Kentucky specifically, taxpayers lose more than 100 million dollars each year to increased spending on roads, as well as the health and safety insurances needed to permit the construction of these mines, training and research, as well as tax subsidies. This number does not include the healthcare costs for those affected by the presence of a mountaintop removal mine or the treatment of the water which this system often pollutes.
