How much does it cost to expand transmission capacity on powerlines?

Power lines are some of the biggest issues with energy, including renewable energy. Wind in particular will require many new power lines to provide power. Power lines are very expensive to build – as much as $2 to $4 million dollars per mile. Power lines are also environmentally expensive – they often cut through natural habitats of productive ecosystems, altering them for the worse. Figuring out how to cheaply and effectively transport our energy is nearly as important as producing the energy to begin with.
