The Institute of Medicine advises that men drink about 3 liters (13 cups) of water per day and that women drink about 2.2 liters (9 cups) every day.
However, doctors are now saying that the recommended amount of water varies depending on your body’s personal needs. A good starting point is eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. This is a good basic guideline for how much water you should drink, although there is no concrete scientific evidence that shows this is the ideal amount; your body may need more or less water.
Another approach is to calculate how much water you lose in normal body functions and drink enough water to replenish this amount. This number will vary individually.
