Most dust masks are good for stopping particulates but not chemical pollutants. They also only stop mostly larger particulates but they can be helpful for sawdust, plaster board, etc. The boxes tell you what they can be used for and what they don’t stop. You always want to find one that is NIOSH rated and approved. For airborne chemicals you would need a respirator.
