How much do people spend on food each year in America?

    As of 2007, the average American family spent 12.4% of their annual income on food purchases. This percentage is comprised of the 7% spent on food at home, and 5.4% spent on restaurant food. Americans spend most of their income on shelter. Transportation is the second highest expense, followed by food.
