If they use non-genetically modified seeds, their crops will bear new seeds which they can save and plant next year, and never spend any money on seeds. But genetically modified seeds do not produce new seeds when they grow, so if a farmer must use hybridized seeds for whatever reason, the seed vendors can charge him or her whatever they want.
