The weight of a particular butterfly will vary based on its species, size and gender. However, in general, butterflies each weigh about .0001 ounce. That’s about 2.83 milligrams. To give you an idea, a single penny weighs about 2.5 grams according to the US Mint. That means it would take about a thousand butterflies to equal the weight of a single penny!

Butterflies look like they’d be as light as a feather, right? Some butterfly species weigh more than others. The smallest weighs about .0001oz (.003g) and the largest .1oz (3g). One of the most well-known butterflies, the Monarch, weighs between .0095 and .026oz (.27-.74g).
