The amount of food ants eat depends on the type of ant. Western Harvester ants, which are used in ant farms, can eat small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables- only one or two small pieces every three days.
Various types of ants eat different amounts of food. Most ants will eat nearly anything, though they tend to have a preference for sweet foods. Depending on the size of the colony, they may eat a huge amount each day, relatively speaking. A colony of red wood ants may take around 100,000 insects back to the colony per day, while a small group could survive on a few insects per day.
