When the tariff system became official in 2008, the cap for the year 2009 was 500 Megawatts, increased from 300 MW after concerns arose regarding unsustainable market growth. As of July 2010, Spain’s solar output is estimated to be 432 megawatts, and solar energy currently fulfills approximately 3 % of the nation’s electricty needs. This makes Spain the fourth largest manufacturer of solar power in the world, thanks in part to the La Florida solar plant, in Alvarado, which annually generates 175,000 megawatt hours.
