The 8.8 earthquake that struck Chili shifted the Earth’s axis by approximately 3 inches, shortening the length of a day by 1.26 milliseconds. Larger earthquakes in the past have had lesser impact on time. The Chili earthquake effected the length of days because of its distance from the equator.
