There are about 250 desalination plants in the U.S. Florida has the most with 120 plants, Texas has 38 and California 33. From the largest plants, 20 million gallons of clean water are created per day. Total U.S. water use is about 408 billion gallons per day (year 2000). Desalination is expensive and can negatively affect marine life (a very salty “brine” is returned to the sea). But desalination has its place after conservation, recycling of graywater, and rainwater catchment as a means to sustainable fresh water and is likely better both socially and environmentally than dams.
