Depleted uranium has been sold by the United States to approximately 29 countries over its history, starting with Israel in 1973. The US has used it itself in both the Gulf War of 1991, where it used about 375 tons, and in the current Iraq War, where anywhere from 1,100 to 2,200 tons were used in the first 2 months. Depleted uranium has been linked to the infamous Gulf War Syndrome, as well as birth defects, radiotion poisoning, and similar ailments. There is a strong argument that its use is illegal under the United Nations Convention on Human Rights.
