    The 1815 eruption was “the largest in historical time”. It earned a rating of seven on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, and was “the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history.” It killed over 71,000 people and sent volcanic ash to surrounding islands. It also destroyed all vegetation of the island of Tambora.

    The ash erupted from Tambora also resulted in the “year without a summer” in 1816, causing much misery in Europe and Eastern USA.
