How much damage did the nuclear arms race cause in America?

The nuclear arms race was destructive in every sense. Thousands of civilians died in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. History tells us this ended the war and saved lives, but in fact the Japanese had already lost countless lives to firebombing campaigns and had already attempted to surrender before the nuclear weapons were used. But the cost amounts to more than human lives. Approximately $2,000,000,000 was spent on this bombing campaign, and it was only the beginning. The United States and Russia both devoted billions of dollars into the production of deadly weapons, siphoning funds away from things like education, infrastructure, and social services. The world was made a more dangerous place with the presence of nuclear weapons and the waste products of their production, with little if any benefit to humanity.
