Tourism is one of the fastest growing parts of Costa Rica’s economy. In 2008, 2.09 million people visited the country, and tourism made up 7.2 percent of the country’s GDP. Visitor numbers fell to 1.9 million in 2009 due to the global economic crisis and the swine flu scare.
