How much of a computer is bad for the environment?

Computers are toxic and cannot be disposed of in municipal waste streams. Some of the most harmful components include the monitors, which contain cathode ray tubes high in lead; the circuit board, which contains mercury, lead and cadmium; and the plastic cases, which are often coated in flame retardant chemicals. Computers should be reused whenever possible, or at least salvaged for parts to prevent these components from entering landfills where they can contaminate air, water, and soil creating major health problems.
