The potential for severe pollution is great. The Tar Sands project requires the use of a large amount of water. Once this water is used and disposed of there is a significant chance that the contaminated water will end up in the drinking supply of communities that live downstream from the project. Some of the contaminants (most notably, Naphthenic Acids) are very difficult to remove from the environment and may be cancer causing.
