You may be surprised to hear this, but Starbucks actually produces enough coffee waste per year to equal the weight of four Boeing 737 airplanes. As you can imagine, this adds up to a lot of coffee wasted per day. However, the company is catching on and making an effort to reduce their waste. The company has stated a goal of serving 100% of its coffee in 100% recyclable cups by the year 2015, and is working towards this goal by supporting the BetaCup competition, a contest for designing the most environmentally friendly disposable coffee cup. (Starbucks will award the winner $20,000) Also, Starbucks locations across the country are now making their used coffee grounds available for composting. If your local Starbucks doesn’t already offer this service, simply ask them and they should be able to make it available to you.
