I’m not sure how to answer the total amount of coal extracted. I can safely tell you that it’s a lot, but more then that I do not know (nor am I sure a number exists).
That said I can give you a more useful number. In 2008 the industry produced 1,171,809 thousand short tons of coal in the U.S., making up about 20 percent of the total world coal production.
If you go to http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/coal/page/acr/table1.html you can see coal production by state.
I didn’t add all the annual totals in the chart in the link, but it looks like something around 45 billion tons of coal produced in the US since 1949.
