Wikipedia estimates that over 2 million tons of cat litter end up in landfills each year. The US Geological Society estimates that 85% of the 2.54 million tons of clay we produce each year are used for pet waste absorption, mainly cat litter. 85% of 2.54 million is about 2.16 million tons, which would roughly back up the claim on Wikipedia.
Total US clay production is actually 25.3 million tons rather than 2.54 million. Of that total, 2.3 million tons is fuller’s earth, the special type of clay usually used for absorbents like cat litter. Pet waste absorbents accounted for most (more than 60% according to the second ref, page 18.4) of fuller’s earth use.
