How much carbon have we cut by getting our music online?

Let’s do a simple calculation and see. From a study, carbon emissions of buying a CD emit .33 kg CO2. Buying online emitted .16 kg CO2 with a fast connection. So we save roughly 1 kg of carbon for every 2 if we buy online. Sales in 2008 were projected to be 3.3 billion dollars. At a cost of $15 per CD, that’s 220 million CDs sold, and 72.6 million kg CO2. Half that, or about 36 million kg CO2, is what was saved in 2008.
