This is a tough question to answer authoritatively, since even the experts (which is to say, candy manufacturers) are only giving estimates. The most recent hard number I could find was a report on Halloween 2005 from the National Confectioners’ Association, which gives the figure for US spending on Halloween candy as about 2.1 billion dollars. Of course, according to another press release on the same website, adults who buy candy to hand out often keep a fair amount for themselves, so the total that goes to trick-or-treaters is really anyone’s guess.
