With some of the better dual flush toilet models, the average household can stand to save about 18,000 gallons of water per year. However, if one were to only flush after #2 instead of making a small flush after #1 then the water savings would be significantly greater.
Quite a bit of water can be saved from only flushing when absolutely necessary. Also be sure to use the bare minimum of toilet paper. If you are looking for another option, green toilets are available. There are so-called “low flow” toilets as well as toilets that provide two flushing options: one with less water for pee and another option that uses more water for heftier jobs.
