How much can we save in cooling costs if we cover all of our buildings with vines?

Green walls are getting more attention, much as green roofs have in recent years. PNC Bank has installed a 2,380 square-foot living wall on their 30-story Pittsburgh headquarters, including more than 14,000 plants. The building’s wall behind the plant structure is 25% cooler than ambient temperatures, which demonstrates a significant savings in energy costs. This is an elaborate green wall but one which requires very little water (15 minutes once each week); vines may be a good low-maintenance option, though the energy savings of a looser-growing plant may be less.
