The simple answer is that we can reduce our oil imports by a lot — we imported close to 4.3 billion barrels in 2009, which was down from 4.7 billion barrels in 2008. The complicated part is how we replace our need to import so much oil. Popular solutions today include drilling more in Alaska, switching to hybrid and other fuel-efficient vehicles, and developing alternative bio-fuels.
