How much can pet waste affect our water quality if it makes its way into our bodies of water?

Pet waste can definitely affect water quality! Fecal bacteria are very dangerous and can make people very sick. There have been documented instances where pet waste in the United States caused serious problems with aquatic contamination. Even if those bacteria were not present, the nitrogenous content of feces and urine can throw off the chemistry of aquatic ecosystems.
