How much can a person shrink in their lifetime as they get older?

People do not per-say shrink as they get older. They actually experience compression in the spine or curvature in the spine which makes them hunch and appear shorter. If adults were measured laying down then most older people would still appear the same. The most someone “shrinks” though is just a few inches.
