How much waste can people cut back on by buying in bulk?

It depends on how much a person normally consumes, and how much packaging each product uses when sold individually versus when sold in bulk. “In bulk” is a very vague term, meaning only “packaged in large quantities”. Bulk packaging does use less packaging for equal amounts of product, however, if you buy perishable products in bulk and fail to use all you have bought before some of it expires, you’ve actually created more trash than if you had bought smaller portions and used all of it.
