How much can recycling help with our carbon footprints?

Recycling reduces carbon emissions on a number of levels. Every good that we use usually has free stages, raw material form, refinement and final form. So recycling basically eliminates the first stage where the material requires the infrastructure to find and extract the raw materials for products and services. This might be the single biggest factor because it cuts back on fuel and energy used and it does not disrupt of the environment. Refinement of used material to be used for new products can, in some cases, be cheaper than producing new products from new material. This stage can differ when using new material or used material, which is where some extra costs can play a role but these are not as big as the first stage costs. Final stage when the product is packaged and delivered or the service implemented is virtually unchanged.
