Barnacles, algae, and other biological organisms that attach themselves onto ships can reduce the efficiency of the ship by up to 40%.  The navy uses biocides to help keep these creatures off of their ships, but have decided to try to develop new sustainable biocides that will not harm the marine environments they work in.
