A person who loses 40% or more of their blood can no longer compensate and will die without a transfusion. Theoretically, a person who loses less than 40% (but still a significant amount, like 30%) can survive without a transfusion, but the odds are certainly against him or her. A transfusion, if done correctly, makes it much easier for the body to stay functioning and eventually heal.
