One of the most damaging aspects of cruise ships has nothing to do with their fuel usage. In the Caribbean Sea cruise ships continue to dump their garbage directly into the ocean. These are the world’s most fragile seas, but Caribbean islands have yet to adopt a UN ban on dumping. Even though a ban was set in 1993, it cannot go into effect until the islands supply information on their ability to handle trash from cruise ships. Most of the nations in the Caribbean have withheld this information, perhaps concerned they would lose valuable tourism dollars if ships sought less regulated ports of call. This is relevant in the quest to green the cruise ship industry, and would remain a concern regardless of the type of fuel used by ships.
