a common definition of desert is an area receiving less than 10 inches of precipitation per year. Using that, look at the map in the link – the areas in red and deep red are desert. There are also desert areas in Alaska.
Rigibson’s map is a great way to visualize how desert ecosystems fit within the context of the United States. For a numerical estimate, though, roughly 5.6% of the lower 48 United States is covered in desert.
