Only 25% have access to running water. Groundwater is the main source of water for 75% of Africans outside of South Africa, due to the lack of more sophisticated water supply management found in other continents.
In South Africa, it is nearly the opposite; 74.4% of households have access to running water.
Sub-Saharan Africa is the most water- and sanitation-deprived region in the world: less than 60% of people have access to safe water, compared to over 80% in most other regions of the world. West Africa and southern central Africa have the least access to water (only 25-50% of people have access). Access to water decreases sharply in rural areas, with less than 50% of the rural population having access to water.
