Because a stroke results from oxygen deprivation to the brain, naked mole rats are a likely research subject because, in their natural habitats, they live in densely populated colonies, deep underground, where oxygen is scarce and carbon dioxide levels are so high that any other mammal breathing the same air would die (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/11/091130141313.htm). Naked mole rats have special adaptations throughout their bodies to deal with this constant hypoxia, and so have worth in stroke research.
