The very first atoms of metal formed inside stars about 12 billion years ago. When these starts exploded, they formed planets, and that’s how Earth was formed. The core of the earth is actually molten iron.
Because metals form the same as other minerals, metals are often mixed with rocks. For example, the sea floor contain a lot of magnesium, but is not just a hunk of magnesium.
