Carbon dioxide is produced when oxygen is combined with carbon while the body is producing energy; think of the air we breathe in and out. The lungs allow oxygen to be breathed in, or inhaled, while simultaneously enabling the body to breathe out, or exhale, carbon dioxide. When the oxygen from the environment is exchanged for the carbon dioxide in the body, it is called respiration; thus, the lungs comprise the body’s respiratory system.
