How many years will it take to actually slow global warming? Will it get worse before it gets better?

Most IPCC reports have determined that given current levels of carbon in the atmosphere, some climate change will be inescapable for the next few decades. Additionally, a study by the National Academy of Sciences has found that anthropogenic climate change is largely irreversible for 1000 years after emissions stop. Natural processes that recycle carbon back out of the air are extremely slow and gradual. Plus, our emissions levels are actually rising globally rather than falling, so it’s very likely that the situation will get worse better it gets better.
