Congress passed the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1973 with the purpose of recovering and protecting imperiled species and the ecosystems upon which they depend, in an effort to preserve our natural heritage. I would expect the endangered species list came simultaneously or soon after the Act.
The Endangered Species Act was passed under the Nixon administration. The first animal added to the list was the peregrine falcon in the late 1970’s, and the first that will be officially removed by Congress is the grey wolf.
