China’s one-child policy was instituted in 1978. There are exceptions for rural families, ethnic minorities, and parents with no siblings. Currently, 35.5% of Chinese couples are subject to the policy. It has been controversial from the start, and critics blame it for forced abortions and female infanticide. However, 76% of Chinese people support it. The policy is set to remain in place until at least 2015.
