It takes your standard 4 years for your undergraduate degree, 2 years of a pre-veterinary, and a 4 year veterinary program. That may or may not include the amount of time you need to spend in a residency program (probably around 3 years). It’s a lot of school but it pays off in the end to be highly trained and experienced.
Veterinary school is usually a four-year program. Many veterinary schools prefer their applicants to complete a four-year bachelors degree prior to starting Vet school, so that’s a total of eight years after high school. The most common age for veterinary applicants was 21 years old (example taken from Penn State in 2004), but almost 20% of applicants were 25-30 years old.
