How many years did it take CFL light bulbs to take off?

The modern CFL bulb was invented by Edward E. Hammer, an engineer at GE, as a response to the 1973 oil crisis, but they were difficult to produce. In the 1980s, production was ramped up. They have only gained popularity recently as people are trying to lower their energy use and carbon footprint.
