It is estimate that only three to five wildfires a year in the U.S. are started by lightning, and typically do not spread over large areas due to the rain that accompanies most lightning strikes. The majority–some 90%–of fires are the result of human interaction, including arson, accidents, fireworks, etc. Altogether, wildfires destroy around 1.2 million acres of woodland in the U.S. every year.
