Yeah, this is a number which is probably impossible to calculate with any accuracy. They haven’t really been saving individual whales, so much as deterring the general practice of whaling. They’ve certainly thrown a monkey wrench into the whaling efforts of the main ship they followed — and they’ve probably deterred a few others as well. But we can never know just how many whales would have been killed if they hadn’t been around; it’s probably a fairly large number, though, depending on the efficiency of the main ship they were following.
